On Monday 9 April, a symposium will be held in the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden to celebrate the conclusion of the Philological and Historical Commentary on Ammianus Marcellinus. Ammianus was the last great historian of the Roman empire, a Greek who wrote in Latin. This project was completed last winter with the publication, with Brill, of the commentary on Book XXXI. Since 1987 when Book XX was published, a constant stream of volumes has been brought out by what came to be the Quadriga Batavorum: two Latinists, Jan den Boeft (professor (emeritus) of Latin at VU University) and Daan den Hengst (professor (emeritus) of Latin at the University of Amsterdam), and two ancient historians, Jan Willem Drijvers (associate professor of Ancient History at Groningen University) and Hans Teitler (senior lecturer (emeritus) in Ancient History at Utrecht University). Together with the older volumes by P. de Jonge (Books XIV-XIX: the first volume was published in 1935) Ammianus' entire work known to us has now been covered. This impressive achievement deserves a festive conclusion.
The programme is:
13.00 – 13.30 arrival
13.30 – 17.15 talks
17.30 – 18.30 drinks and congratulations
Chair: Irene de Jong (ACASA). Speakers: François Paschoud, Bruno Bleckmann, Harm Pinkster, Gavin Kelly, Jan Willem Drijvers, Daan den Hengst, Hans Teitler.
