The information explosion of the last two decades has triggered an interest in the historical precursors of such a phenomenon. We are conditioned to some extent to associate the origins of the modern encyclopedia with the efforts of the French philosophe Denis Diderot in the eighteenth century, and to travel back even further in time for pre-modern examples of the encyclopedia to the thirteenth century, to the great collections of knowledge of scholastic figures like Vincent of Beauvais. For a variety of reasons that are explored in this volume, Renaissance humanists differed from their scholastic predecessors in their attitudes toward knowledge, their practices of compilation and organization, and the goals towards which they oriented their scholarly pursuits.

Prolongement d'une journée d'études qui s'est tenue à l'École française de Rome les 26 et 27 octobre 2015, ce volume est le premier recueil d'études consacré à l'œuvre de Florus de Lyon (floruit ca. 825–855). Ses douze compilations sur les Épîtres de Paul, éditées sous le nom de « Collection des Douze Pères » (Collectio ex dictis XII Patrum), avaient été découvertes au milieu du XVIIe siècle, mais n'ont été éditées pour la première fois que récemment. Ce corpus d'un gros millier d'extraits, qui puise à plus de deux cents textes patristiques et canoniques, nous conserve l'image d'une bibliothèque célèbre en son temps, celle du chapitre cathédral de Lyon, au prisme de son plus notable acteur, le diacre Florus. Pour beaucoup des œuvres tardo-antiques qui y sont citées, Florus offre ainsi le plus ancien témoignage dont les philologues puissent disposer. En réunissant des spécialistes de presque tous les auteurs impliqués dans ce corpus aux multiples facettes, ce volume représente la première tentative d'étudier les méthodes et les choix du compilateur, d'analyser et de comparer les manuscrits qu'il a lui-même utilisés, d'entrer enfin dans cette bibliothèque carolingienne.

Au début du II e siècle avant notre ère, Rome allait s'engager dans un second conflit contre le royaume de Macédoine, marquant de ce fait son intervention de plain-pied dans les affaires du monde hellénistique. C'est durant cette guerre qu'allait s'illustrer un jeune consul d'à peine trente ans, Titus Q. Flamininus, qui par ses nombreux gestes d'éclat allait devenir aux yeux des Anciens, mais également auprès des historiens modernes, le « libérateur de la Grèce ». Loin de la figure du général philhellène romantique que certains ont voulu dépeindre, Flamininus apparaît au contraire comme un homme politique ambitieux, doté d'une rare subtilité, qui a su le premier comprendre toute la puissance des traditions des grandes monarchies hellénistiques qui ont succédé à l'empire d'Alexandre, lorsqu'elles furent mises au service de son ambition personnelle et des intérêts politiques de Rome. La carrière de Flamininus illustre ainsi les transformations politiques et culturelles profondes survenues à cette époque, au moment où Rome allait peu à peu étendre son hégémonie sur le bassin méditerranéen.

Este no es un libro más sobre los visigodos en Hispania, sino una "guía" en forma de breve "manual" concebida para facilitar el trabajo de los estudiantes. Por ello, se ha obviado la discusión puramente historiográfica, aunque a cambio se ha dedicado mucho más espacio a la bibliografía específica de cada tema y sobre todo a las fuentes. También se examinan con detalle la organización política y las estructuras socio-económicas del reino toledano. Y no se olvida tampoco el esencial ámbito religioso, inseparable de la dimensión política.

In Caesar's Civil War: Historical Reality and Fabrication, Westall combines literary analysis of Caesar's Bellum Civile with a concern for the socio-economic history of the Roman empire. The Bellum Gallicum and the Shakespearean play are better known, but Caesar's partisan account of the Roman civil war culminating in the battle of Pharsalus offers a historical text of perennial interest and relevance.
Two introductory chapters contextualize this book and offer a traditional narrative of political and military history for 49-48 BCE. There follow seven chapters that are dedicated to each of the geographical theatres of civil war.
