Panel: Exploring Rhetorical Strategies Across Greek and Latin Imperial Prose

Appel à contributions
Date limite : 20/02/2025

Dear colleagues,

We are delighted to share the call for papers for the panel “Exploring Rhetorical Strategies Across Greek and Latin Imperial Prose”, which will be presented at the Celtic Conference in Classics in Coimbra on 15–18/07/2025 (more information about the conference here: https://www.uc.pt/cech/16-ccc/).
Building on recent studies that emphasize the role of rhetoric in shaping literary practices, the panel aims to refine our understanding of the reception of rhetorical theory and practice in Greek and Latin literary and didactic prose of the Imperial era up to the 3rd c. CE.
We particularly welcome papers working from a cross-linguistic perspective, investigating how Latin texts interact with Greek rhetoric and vice versa, and papers focusing on novels and didactic texts.

Submissions may address but are not limited to questions such as:
*which rhetorical concepts and strategies appear to be particularly prominent;
*whether and which specific rhetorical strategies appear to be adopted in ways that are genre- and/or culturally specific, and whether literary practice may endorse or challenge specific strategies or concepts;
*whether and to what extent the categories developed in intertextual studies can be applied to interpret the role of rhetoric in ancient literary genres;
*when the use of what we read as rhetorical strategies can really be taken to indicate an active engagement with rhetorical culture, and why;
*whether and why key rhetorical concepts were formulated differently in Greek and in Latin rhetorical texts, whether specific strategies and concepts originating in or redefined by Latin rhetorical theory can be traced within Greek literary texts or Greek rhetorical treatises.
