In order to gain a deeper understanding of the shifting idea of authority of a text, its transmission and reception in a variety of genres, settings and contexts, this collective volume envisages to enlarge and deepen this understanding in tangling literary forgery and emulation. Authority and authoritative literary productions provoke all kinds of interest and emulation. Hermeneutical techniques, detailed exegesis and historical critique are invoked to put authority, and yes also possible falsifications, to the test. Scholars from various disciplines working on texts, either authoritative or forged, stemming from different periods of time reflect on a methodological basis and a hermeneutical entrance. In addition, a threefold axis of questioning the phenomenon of forgery is presented, viz. the motif of falsification, the mechanism or technique applied and, third, the direct or indirect effect of this fraud.

La Constitution des Athéniens est un pamphlet écrit par un Athénien du V^e siècle avant notre ère : partisan d'un régime oligarchique, l'auteur reproche à la démocratie de laisser la parole aux pauvres et de leur donner le pouvoir d'opprimer les riches, qui devraient être, selon lui, les seuls à gouverner. Pour les historiens d'aujourd'hui, cet écrit est une source majeure sur le fonctionnement de la démocratie athénienne et sur l'idéologie oligarchique, mais il n'a pas toujours été compris ainsi.
Les actes du colloque qui s'est tenu à Strasbourg en novembre 2018 retracent les aventures de ce pamphlet. Ils sondent les voies de sa transmission et parcourent l'histoire de ses lectures, de l'Athènes antique à l'époque contemporaine. Peu cité dans l'Antiquité, l'opuscule arrive en Italie avec les lettrés byzantins et circule dans les manuscrits qu'échangent les humanistes. Longtemps attribué à Xénophon et perçu comme un tableau de mœurs fidèle, il vient souvent illustrer les dangers du pouvoir populaire. Et ce sont des progressistes en politique qui contestent son crédit historique, parce qu'il témoigne d'idées contraires aux leurs. Loin, cependant, de toute progression linéaire, son interprétation et son usage varient au gré d'influences multiples : l'évolution scientifique, mais aussi les circonstances, l'esprit du temps, la personnalité des interprètes ou leur tendance politique, des monarchistes aux marxistes en passant par les républicains ou les franquistes. En analysant les jalons majeurs de la réception de l'opuscule, ce volume remet en perspective ses interprétations d'hier et d'aujourd'hui.

This multidisciplinary volume features a targeted study of the main questions relating to Roman historiography. It envisages successively the morphology, the themes and the survival of that major literary form. In point of fact historiography appears etymologically less as a science than as an art aiming to express through writing the significance of the human messages conveyed by the past. In this respect we must never lose sight of the fact that knowledge of history proves to be essential for the education as well of the citizens as of the high rulers, whose public services have to be put in perspective.
Ce volume pluridisciplinaire propose une étude ciblée des principales questions afférentes à l'historiographie romaine. Il envisage successivement la morphologie, les thématiques et la postérité d'un genre littéraire majeur. Tant il est vrai que, étymologiquement, l'historiographie se présente moins comme une science que comme un art visant à exprimer par l'écriture la signification des messages humains que contient le passé. A cet égard, on ne perdra jamais de vue que les connaissances historiques chez les Romains s'avèrent indispensables aussi bien à la formation des citoyens qu'à celle des hauts dirigeants, dont il s'agit de mettre en perspective les actions au service de l'Etat.
